This is where you’ll find Abra. It may take a few turns to eventually find one, but with a bit of persistence a wild Abra should soon turn up. It’s likely that you’ll first encounter Caterpies, Bellsprouts, Metapods, and Pidgeys.

Abra teleports away from the fight

To catch Abra in Pokémon Blue you’ll have to exercise a lot of patience. It can take a long time. Not only stumbling upon a wild Abra in the grass, but also getting one to stick around long enough to catch it before it teleports away.

The best way to catch an Abra is to put it to sleep and launch pokeballs at it until you eventually succeed in capturing it. Sleep powder works well here.

If you’re travelling without pokémon with the ability to induce sleep it’s still possible to catch Abra, but you’ll need even more patience.

In this instance simply attack Abra once to drain its health. More often than not, Abra will teleport away as soon as it is hit. On the occasion that Abra sticks around, though, throw a pokeball forward and pray for the best – eventually, you’ll catch Abra!

Catching Abra

In Pokémon Blue,Red, and Yellow, Abra can evolve into Kadabra starting from level 16. Kadabra is a Psychic type pokémon that learns some powerful attacks as it levels up such as Psybeam (LV 27), Psychic (LV 38), and Reflect (LV 42).

Training your Abra to evolve into a Kadabra is definitely worth it as Kadabra is lightyears ahead of Abra in all ways and, despite still having fairly low Attack and Defense stats, it is a great pokémon to start fights with due to its Speed. Having a Psychic type pokémon in your team is always a good idea, and Kadabra has the very useful ability to confuse opponents, too.

Ash vs Alakazam

In Pokémon Blue, Red, and Yellow, evolving Kadabra into Alakazam requires a trading partner. As soon as you trade a Kadabra with a friend, it will evolve into an Alakazam, giving you one of the most powerful Psychic type Pokémon in the whole game. If you have Pokémon Fire Red, you can stop Kadabra from trade-evolving with an Everstone.

If you’re playing on an emulator that doesn’t allow trading, follow this evolving trade-evolved pokémon guide here.

How long did it take you to catch Abra?
